contemplation
…”focuses on both taking quiet time to reflect on what we observe going on around, within, and between us, and partnering together to do the work of tending the garden.”
certification
Knowing the farmer who grew your food is the best way to know if you are getting the freshest and healthiest food available. Food today comes with all kinds of certifications and labels, like "non-GMO", "organic", or "all-natural". These can be misleading and/or confusing. It has been suggested that the most important certification you can look for in your food is "face certification"; can you look into the face of the people who grew this produce when you buy it?!
pest pressure
Finding safe ways to deal with pests is one of the sustainable farmer's biggest challenges. How we approach this problem and its implications, highlight some of the key concepts of sustainable farming and key differences from conventional farming…
first fruits
As farmers, we work hard planning, planting, weeding, watering, fighting off pests, all to ensure a good harvest. However, there are realities that are beyond our control; there are larger forces at work that cause a seed to sprout, that drive weather patterns, that cause a harvest to be bountiful or sparse. The fact that we are able to hold a fresh radish in our hands is the result of much more than just a farmer's hard work.
csa pick-up
By now it should be clear that Community Support Agriculture represents a different way to connect to your food source; the increased variety, the freshness of picked-that-day produce, new tastes, & benefits to the community and local economy.
seasonality
Community Supported Agriculture is for adventurous eaters, conscientious consumers, and those with culinary curiosity. As we move through the spring's cool weather crops, to summer staples, and on to fall's long season crops, you'll get to experience a wide spectrum of the over 70 different crops of fruits and vegetables we grow at 5 Loaves Farm.
great expectations
Participating in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) means being a part of a new and more just food system. It's a different way of getting and relating to your food.
Celebrate the Harvest
This Thanksgiving season, even in the midst of our current hardships, 5LF is thankful for and wants to celebrate the bounty of our harvest this year and the amazing support of our community. These two things go hand in hand; it is only because of the support of our neighbors that we are able to produce and share this bountiful harvest. This year, for our 9th annual Celebrate the Harvest fall fundraiser, we are featuring hot foods made by neighbors of the farm, farm-fresh produce, and great gift ideas for you to share as you celebrate the holiday season.
